I read the note three times before I was convinced it wasn’t a joke, and that’s when I started to feel green around the gills. This would have been a no-brainer a month ago. An opportunity like this came once in a lifetime. Who wouldn’t want to live in the Twin Cities and go to school for free and eat at restaurants that didn’t serve hot beef and white bread as their specials?

But now, I wasn’t so sure.

I stood up so abruptly that I scraped the back of my leg on the deck. I went into the house purposefully, crumpled up Dr. Lindstrom’s letter, and tossed it in the garbage. I opened the fridge, fixed myself supper, and stuck Thelma and Louise into the VCR.

I watched it until I was too tired to keep my eyes open, and then I popped off to bed, but not before I pulled Dr. Lindstrom’s letter out of the garbage, smoothed it out, and set it on my kitchen table to look at again in the morning.
